Tandem Architecture was founded on the notion of balancing the technical discipline of architecture with the free form aesthetics of design. We believe people should feel comfortable, both physically and psychologically in our buildings.

Environmental controls need to be in balance with the building envelope; the spaces must flow and meet the needs of their intended use while also satisfying the budgets and schedules of our clients.

The Promenade at Founder’s Square Pool House

Created for the residents of the Promenade at Founder’s Square, this pool house was designed by Tandem to accommodate the needs of the community’s population. After master-planning the pool, dog run, and exterior gathering spaces, Tandem designed the pool house structure. The Promenade at Founder’s Square Amenity Spaces

Tandem was selected to design a modern amenity space for the Promenade at Founder’s Square. Through multiple design iterations using plans, renderings, and concept development, Tandem created an inviting amenity space with many flexible uses. Webster Office & Apartments

Located near the intersection of Webster Avenue and Clybourn in the Lincoln Park neighborhood, this project began with a vision to retrofit an old tannery building into a new mixed-use space. The building will include dedicated office space and retail opportunity on the main floor with a series of intimate loft-like apartments on the second floor. The changed use of the building allowed us the opportunity to update the first floor exterior to be a modern, bright, and inviting space. Harmony Station in Tinley Park

Tandem Architecture created a conceptual site plan and proposal for a 4.4-acre property across from the Tinley Park Metra Station. For the project, Tandem designed three buildings with 130 new apartments, approximately 10,000sf of retail, 3,000sf of clubhouse space and other amenities in conjunction with a new park proposed by the Village on the adjacent property. The 3-story buildings were designed to blend into the existing neighborhood and create a welcoming, traditional, retail facade to the neighboring commuter station and new park.   Location: Tinley Park, IL Architect: Tandem Architecture Developer: Holladay Properties, Inc Size: 4.4 Acres Units: 130 Mixed-use

Lilac Station in Lombard

Tandem Architecture created a design for a proposed 120-unit mixed-use apartment building and a new 12,000sf grocery store on a 2-acre site across from the Metra Station in downtown Lombard. The building features a corner arcade intended as a public gathering space outside the lobby and an outdoor element for a future restaurant. The U-shaped building has a protected public space with direct access to the street, balconies for each unit, and raised terraces at the street level to conceal the below grade parking. 70 surface parking spaces are provided for the future CO-OP Grocery store with its own 2,000sf […]

Easton Station in Buffalo Grove

Tandem Architecture designed the new site plan and a proposed product line for a 2-acre property in unincorporated Prairie View, IL, one block from the Metra Station. Tandem coordinated all of the site engineering, performed the entitlement work and worked with the Village of Buffalo Grove to annex and improve the parcel. As a result, we obtained approval for 15 multifamily units with a mix of 2-story duplexes and 3-story townhomes on the compact site.   Location: Buffalo Grove, IL Architect: Tandem Architecture Size: 2 Acres Units: 15  

The Promenade at Founder’s Square

In collaboration with the City of Portage, Tandem designed a vibrant, mixed-use project for the Central Business District, totaling 346,000 square feet. Nine apartment buildings containing 304 new apartments were designed with unique elevations to create a dynamic, urban experience. The four buildings facing the town square provide nearly 10,000 square feet of retail space and housing. Quincy Station in Westmont

Tandem Architecture was retained to design a 94 unit, 5-story mixed-use building in downtown Westmont, Illinois across from the Metra Station. The prominent site is a corner parcel of 0.88 acres and the design includes two levels of parking with 123 total spaces. Proposed amenities include a fitness center, lobby/coffee lounge, patio, and a penthouse clubhouse with an outdoor terrace overlooking downtown. Gold Coast Townhome Renovation

Tandem worked with the owner of an historic row home in Chicago’s Gold Coast to fully renovate and expand the 1903 structure. The impeccable design by Studio CAK necessitated an acute attention to detail to meet the exacting standards befitting a home of this stature. Unique elements to this project included the arduous task of receiving city approval for a curb cut to create a new basement garage, adding an additional floor to the home, and reconfiguring an intricate central staircase. St. Charles Addition

Tandem designed this new addition onto a mid-century modern ranch home in St. Charles. The family needed to add a Master Bedroom and Family Room as well as update the exterior. West Loop Car Gallery & Lounge

Formerly built as a warehouse in 1908, Tandem transformed the space into a private auto gallery, now home to an impressive collection of vintage European cars. The gallery features a car detailing bay, media area, and sleeping accommodations for overnight guests. An entertainment lounge was designed to host gatherings with friends, featuring a sunken bar that provides an expansive view of the collection. To maintain and celebrate the character of the building, we created a “Hopes” glass window wall to preserve the original wood columns. Highland Park Home

This custom single family home was designed in the “Modern Farmhouse” style and was arranged under the original design premise to resemble a series of additions built around an existing barn. The interior is designed to open out to nature but also shield the two young children they have so the home is U-shaped to create a protected courtyard and also features a walled play area. Old Irving Park Residence

Tandem was sought out to design and build a house that embodied the historic feel of an old mansion while providing the modern elements of a new luxury home. The property sits on a third of an acre, which is a rarity in the city of Chicago. We leveraged 78 custom windows to complement the large property and, at nearly 6,600 square feet, the home features a rich brick and limestone façade and slate roof. Water Street Townhome

To rebuild this Riverfront townhome in the Streeterville neighborhood, Tandem partnered with Interior Designer Suzanne Lovell. The project required a full gut remodel, modifying, reinforcing, and sound proofing the existing structure per the client’s request. The finishes are of exceptional quality; every piece of woodwork is custom-built and hand painted in a vintage, brushed finish. Logan Square Residence

The intended design for this project was to push the perception of new single-family architecture within Chicago’s Logan Square neighborhood, delivering an elevated level of interior finishes, rarely found in comparably priced homes. Tandem approached the project with a commitment to simplicity, creating a residence that emulated an underscored, modern character. Lincoln Square Residence

The design goal for this project was to create a structure that would be complemented by the surrounding neighborhood. Calling upon a modern farmhouse design, we blended the elevation into the existing landscape while delivering a contrast with elements such as a metal clad front door and integral planters. Taking advantage of its rare, corner location, we placed the front door on the side of the home to allow people to enter in through the middle of the residence.
